"The Northern Style" hive is perfect for beekeepers that live in longer winter climates. With longer winters, your hive needs more dedicated space/resources to survive the cold months. While a Southern hive may need to only dedicate 1 deep brood box to make it through winter, a hive in the North is best suited with 2 deep brood boxes.

Queens usually need about 13 or 14 deep frames dedicated to brood while the rest can be for honey storage. In this Northern Style hive, the queen would have a full two deep boxes for brood. Having more dedicated brood area allows for more cells to be filled with eggs as your hive is going into the winter.

The two medium honey supers above the brood chamber will allow your bees to move vertically in your hive to find food. Bees naturally want to move vertically instead of horizontally in a hive during winter so they can stay in a cluster and move up towards the heat.

NuBee beehives are constructed using Fir wood and have dovetail joints for greater durability. They use CellTech foundations that have already been coated in 100% beeswax to ensure your bees quickly develop an even layer of comb. Their foundations are made of food grade plastic and have been colored for useful purposes. The black food grade plastic was chosen for the deep brood frames to make it easier for you to inspect the white brood eggs against a dark background. For the medium honey supers, a honey colored food grade plastic was chosen to make it easier for you to inspect the honey for debris while it's still in the cells.

Why Choose an 8 Frame Hive?

The major benefit of an 8 frame hive is that it weighs 20% less than a 8 frame hive. Honey is heavy. A 8 frame brood box that is full of honey can weigh up to 90 lbs while medium boxes can weigh up to 60lbs. A 20% difference can save your back.

Why Choose NuBee Hives?

From day one NuBee has sought to lower barriers that prevent people from picking up the veil and becoming a backyard beekeeper. With this goal in mind, NuBee originally focused on developing an 8 frame hive that would be as light and durable as possible, at an honest price.

Since then NuBee has grown into 10 frame beehives and are now a favorite first hive among beekeepers. Their balance between high quality and affordability is second to none. They continue to delight customers with their attention to detail at such a great price. Every joint has been cut using dovetails to ensure a perfectly square hive.

NuBee uses a combination of Fir and Pine to produce treasures that will last for years to come. The craftsmanship is noteworthy and their hive parts are cut using the same industry standard dimensions that all other Langstroth beehive brands are made with. This means every one of their parts are interchangeable with any other 8 frame beehive parts you may already have.

These days, NuBee continues to lower barriers by dedicating its extra time to teaching beekeepers how to start successful apiaries. They are not only equipping you with the right tools, but are focusing on equipping you with the right knowledge on how to use them.
